My Black Apple Doll

Black Apple Doll

On October 9th, I stalked The Black Apple's etsy shop because the word was out that Emily was going to list a couple of doll making kits. The kits would include original fabric by the talented Emily Martin. Knowing that these kits would likely go fast, I decided to check her shop every hour (madness, I know). Finally, she listed her kits and I was fortunate enough to snatch one up. I believe she listed 20 something kits of 3 designs and they all sold within 4 minutes! So, above is the finished product and I like her. The fabric is a nice weight and the entire kit is very fast and simple to sew up. However, when it came to painting the face I was extremely nervous. I have made Black Apple Dolls in the past (here and here), but never with Emily's original fabric, which is the whole reason why I bought the kit. I knew that if I messed up the face the entire doll would be ruined forever =( Do you remember that childhood game Operation, where you have to have a really steady hand or else a freakishly loud buzzer would sound? That's how I felt when painting the dolls face. I went ahead and lightly penciled in the eyes and lips (per Emily's suggestion) and then painted the face. In the end, I think it turned out just fine. I still would love an original Black Apple Doll, but for now Serrianna (my daughter named her) will do.

I do have to point out the cute little birdie button on Serrianna's scarf. It's one of Elsa Nora's handmade buttons, which I blogged about yesterday. The button makes this doll very special to me, because I have combined two of my favorite artists' works in one doll =) Serrianna now sits near the books where she feels most natural.

Gosh, I think she's beautiful! The face is perfect - she reminds me of a vintage doll my grandmother might have!

Just finding you through True Up and love that you linked to The Office in another post. Also love your shop and the way that you painted this doll face. Could you share the type of paint you used? (I'd be scared to attempts that too, btw.)

Thanks,

Hello Molly - I can't tell you how happy I am that someone got my office joke =)

As for the paint, I used Joann's craft paint. First, I lightly penciled in the face and then painted it. I kept a pic of an original Black Apple doll in front of me so I could refer to it for shading.

Thanks for commenting.

Wow, you did a great job painting the face! I got a kit during the first run, and blogged about it on Halloween if you want to see mine :-) I went with the classic face since I am not brave enough to tackle the "Sophie"eque face.

So, I do not actually believe it is likely to work.
